A New Approach to Dental and Orthodontic Marketing

I heard statements like this all the time as a Territory Manager at Align Technology. It actually made me excited because I love marketing and it meant I could help. You see, I grew up with my father being a big-wig at one of the largest advertising agencies in the world. I was in awe watching all the commercials, holding new packaging and trying new foods that were not even launched yet. I tell you, at the age of 9, the trumpets sounded when I opened up the “Cookie Closet” next to his office! But I digress…

This fascination as a kid is what led to my studying marketing and psychology and is ultimately what drove my success at Align. For 13 years, I enjoyed helping offices thrive by creating actionable plans to implement Invisalign into the practice and market it to their patients and community.

In 2017, my father retired and shortly after that my mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominately dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Her diagnosis caused my father to immediately begin reading anything and everything pertaining to neuroscience. What he soon realized is that the rational decision process that is the foundation of all current marketing philosophies is wrong. Neuroscience has proven it is wrong. What?!

He became obsessed with trying to figure out a better model for how people really make decisions. A model that was rooted in science but that could also be easily applied to marketing. He showed me how people really made decisions with their subconscious/Primal Brain, not their rational/Logical Brain. And he figured out that the Primal Brain isn’t just a ball of emotions. It actually has a logic of its own! After seeing it all laid out, I immediately saw the value it could bring to all the orthodontic & dental offices I’d partnered with in the past.
